Today, she wants to tell you a little secret… About a little food establishment tucked away in Five Points. She knows, she knows. Another post about Five Points?! Is she stuck in the past recalling her college days? No, no. Although, she must admit, she did have tons o’ fun while in college – maybe even so much on occasion that she can’t remember it. Whoops!

Fact: she loves Five Points and hates when people give it a bad wrap or think they’re too cool to hang out there. Pfftt! It’s a lovely part of town and there’s so much to do – shop, dine, play, imbibe, and on and on and on…

Today, she’s focused on the dine part. Have you been to Pho Viet? She has. She stumbled upon the quaint little shop tucked away on Devine Street mid-evening with one of her gal pals. They were starved and had never been. They thought why not? And they were pleased.

The color scheme was pleasing and the dining area was quiet. All around wins. They sat down and were a bit overwhelmed by the vast selection of choices available on the menu. Fortunately, they had a lovely server who was happy to help them make a selection based on what they told him they liked. How’s that for service?

The noodle house is a somewhat quick place to eat as you can stroll right up to the counter and place an order to-go or you can sit for a spell and draw out your meal. The city girl and her gal pal chose the latter as they had been strolling into and out of nearly every shop in Five Points.

It wasn’t too long before their food arrived at the table. The city girl can’t quite remember what she ordered because their delightful server really made the choice for her; she just told him what she liked and didn’t.

There were lots of vegetables, some protein, of course noodles, and a yummy sauce! There were even miniature rolls that accompanied her meal. Quelle surprise! How do you say that in Vietnamese…? (Note to self: she’ll need to ask next time she is there.) Bonus: There was enough food to take home leftovers to make lunch the next day. That is the best! When the food is yummy and you can make another meal of it.

She suggests that you get to Pho Viet soon. You’ll find them on Devine Street between Harden and Saluda near Goatfeathers another fave Five Points establishment of the city girl. She doesn’t exactly plan what to write rather she sort of just lives her life and then writes about what happened in some order. Occasionally a friend will inspire a post – read “Like Velvet, If You Please…” – or a memory – read “What Does Heaven Smell Like?“. And other times, she write about something she feels is newsworthy like an event or a holiday. Rarely, she is inspired to write something based on just one person’s thought. Today is rarely.

That one person today, we’ll call him 37. The city girl will simply say that he’s maybe not such a fan of her ability to purchase multiple pair of shoes in one day. So she mused that perhaps tomorrow she would write about bubbly and blouses (maybe more to his liking…) We’ll see.

Where to begin? Blouses. Let’s begin with a definition. According to dictionary.com a blouse is defined when used as a noun:

noun

1.a usually lightweight, loose-fitting garment for women andchildren, covering the body from the neck or shoulders more orless to the waistline, with or without a collar and sleeves, worninside or outside a skirt, slacks, etc.

2.a single-breasted, semifitted military jacket.

3.a loose outer garment, reaching to the hip or thigh, or belowthe knee, and sometimes belted. Compare smock frock.

Do you have your own definition of blouse? The city girl does. She thinks blouse infers something feminine and chic. A blouse is not a shirt or top in her opinion. She has a favorite plaid flannel shirt but a blouse it does not make.

She has a few blouses in her closet. One of her faves? A black Tibi blouse with a beaded collar. See for yourself.

She doesn’t wear it often because she reserves for when she is feeling very fashion brave or needs something especially fancy-feeling. The best part about this designer dud? She scored it at Coplon’s during their 80% off sale a few years back – read it only cost about $40!

In fact, she’s headed to Coplon’s today for the Trina Turk event from 11-1 with one of her gal pals. Maybe she’ll wear her blouse, maybe they’ll have bubbly. [fingers crossed]

Have you heard her say bubbly makes it better? Well, it does. At least in her world. Lately, she has taken a bit of a break from her usual consumption. So, she can’t call to mind her favorite glass recently, but she can tell you that her friend Patti at Wine Down on Main never disappoints.

She stocks a healthy selection of bubbly – of all sorts. You know real champagne only comes from a small region in France of the same name. From Italy? Prosecco. From Spain? Cava. From right here in the good ole US of A? Sparkling wine. It’s true. She doesn’t make these things up.

Now that you’ve had a miniature lesson in the bubbly, take a gander at this.

Sometimes when she’s had a long day, she just reminds herself that bubbly makes it better. Et voila! Nothing seems as terrible. She doesn’t often keep a messy desk. In fact, just the opposite, but when things get crazy so does her desk.

Until then, she’d like to share some of her semi-recently shoe finds. She thinks that you’ll love them as much as she does. Have you been to Revente in Five Points? No?! Quelle dommage! Get there now friend. Why? Only because the city girl guarantees that you will fall in love with something and it will be reasonably priced. See for yourself…

Aren’t they just precious?! She thinks so. So she bought them. Which means you can’t, but she promises that there are plenty of other pairs just calling your name.

The city girl had been eyeing these for sometime. They were originally priced at $50. A steal considering they retail at $125. They city girl loved them the moment she laid eyes on them, but decided to exercise some self control. Each time she stepped back into Revente, there they were just staring at her. One day, to her delight, she was browsing the racks and noticed her beloved flats – but this time with a slash through the price. $25. SOLD. She couldn’t believe it. She was so excited she wore them out of the store! How’s that for a bargain?!

In fact, she wore them all the way next door to Revente’s sister store Sid and Nancy. Have you never been there either? What? The city girl is going to kidnap you for an afternoon shopping rendez-vous soon.

Back to the story… If Revente is chic and sophisticated, Sid and Nancy is hip and edgy. They have the coolest stuff in there – maybe because they have the coolest staff and the coolest owner. Get to know Debbie McDaniel if you don’t already. She digresses. She can’t help it.

It’s rare that the city girl visits one store and not the other. They are after all right next door, so it’s hard to not pop into both. It’s also a solid strategy for keeping a balanced wardrobe – a little chic with a little edgy is the jam.

Sometimes she finds a million things she loves and wants to take home and other times, she doesn’t have such luck. That particular day the shoe gods must have been shining down on her because she found these.

Two things. One: these are just awesome. Two: note the price, $12. And the city girl didn’t even have to pay that full amount! What? Does she get a special deal because she shares her love of Sid and Nancy on her blog. No way. She had some store credit leftover. $5 to be exact, so she paid a whopping $7 for those adorable flats.

Wondering how you get store credit at Sid and Nancy? It’s Columbia’s only buy, sell, trade clothing store. You take your duds in and have the option to get some cash or store credit. If you opt for store credit, you get more. That rocks. The city girl loves this program because she is always finding something new that she loves at Sid and Nancy. (And that reminds her that she needs to clean out her closet and make a trip to her favorite buy, sell, trade shop.)

Ok, so that sums up her shoe shopping. Well, at least, for that day. Guilty. She loves shoes and won’t embarrass herself by sharing how many pair actually live in her house. Yipes.

No, she didn’t forget about her favorite pair of shoes. She’s still thinking… With so many, how can she choose just one. Full disclosure: you may be shocked by this choice. The city girl absolutely cannot live without her Classic Burlap TOMS. They are perfect for nearly everything possibly imaginable. She more or less lives in them. In fact, she wears them so often that she’s worn a hole in the toe of them and the heel, too. Time to replace. (Looks like she’ll be headed to Half Moon Outfitters soon.) She’s dying to clean out her closet now and run to Half Moon Outfitters and pickup a new pair of TOMS. So, until the next adventure…

Anyhow, the city girl usually keeps it pretty mild. She’ll have a signature bevvie or two or maybe some bubbly before she calls it a night. On rare occasion however, the city girl may imbibe a bit too much. She has to reach back to Festivus in Five Points two years ago. She was participating in the Airing of Grievances Bar Crawl and well maybe she went to all of the bars.

She won’t bore you scare you with the details. Instead she’ll just show you one of the highlights of Five Points, the fountain. See for yourself.

She is really sharing the skeletons in her closet to tell you about the morning after. And really how to make yourself feel much better despite the ridiculous amount of fun in which you partook the previous evening.

So, how does the city girl make it through the next day? She starts by sticking to her Saturday morning ritual. She visited the All Local Farmers Market – now Soda City at its new home on Main Street – and met some friends. See for yourself…

Are you wondering what that has to do with feeling better? She’s getting there. After explaining to her dear friends that the Airing of Grievances Bar Crawl was still lingering that morning, they had just the thing to make her feel better.

Bubbly.

She was in no shape to argue and she wouldn’t have won anyway, so she caved and imbibed. It wasn’t just bubbly though. Do you see those delicious looking donuts in the photo? No. Look closer. They are none other than right-out-of-the-fryer warm apple cinnamon donuts from Windy Hill Orchard and Cider Mill.

That’s it? Indeed. The city girl is a firm believer in sticking with what you know and love. She knows and loves bubbly and donuts. She may have carried over the theme of over indulgence to the market that morning. She couldn’t consume just one donut, so she had a few. She had an excuse… She was trying to feel better.

She had to head out to the Festivus Shopping and Art Crawl that night, so she promptly left the market and went home to enjoy a long nap. Until the next adventure…

Anyhow, the city girl was doing a bit of cleaning this weekend when unearthed an old spiral bound notebook. See for yourself.

From Graduate School: One Hot Pink Spiral Bound Notebook

You may be wondering why she finds this hot pink spiral bound notebook so important that it merits a whole post. Well, let her tell you… She opened up the notebook and flipped through pages and got all nostalgic – about graduate school. The notebook contained notes from two classes she took during her time as a graduate student studying art history.

The notes reminded her of her studies of the American Decorative Arts and the famous Italian, Alberti. it may seem not so intriguing, but she for a moment thought about how much she loved being a student. And that led her to the title of this post.

When she was in graduate school, she remembers dreading the reading at times or feeling exhausted of any desire to learn anymore or take another test or write another paper because it all seemed like a bit of a formality. Now, however, that she’s in the real world she thinks how naive she was.

She daydreams of creative ways to become a professional student. You know…? Make of living of learning. If you have any ideas, please share them with her. She promises she’ll reward you handsomely – read: imbibe in the best bubbly with you.

Did you notice that beautiful rose gold flicker beneath her hot pink spiral bound notebook? That is another prized possession, her iPad. She loves it and would be remiss to not send a BIG thank you in the direction of the North Pole. Santa Claus was verah nice to thy city girl this year.

What does that mean? It means that the International Man of Mystery has had a special place in heart for a long time. [Read this post to learn more about the IMM.] Anyhow, he has enviable – is that a word – charm.

The city girl and her IMM speak nearly everyday. On one particular day, the two were complaining about their lives. They’re not perfect and despite being so fabulous, they do have a bad day here and there. The city girl was complaining about Valentine’s Day. Normally, it’s not a thing for her, but this year, she felt exceptionally annoyed by the holiday. So, she shared with her IMM. He retorted, reminding her that being on assignment in the desert with all dudes left quite a bit to be desired.

So, they agreed to be one another’s Valentine because why not? They chatted more and ended their conversation. They city girl thought about it no more. So, imagine her surprise when these arrived on Valentine’s Day.

Are you falling in love? She did. More or less, but really more. Isn’t he tres charming? What’s most lovely about the arrangement that arrived at her office is that it’s not your usual Valentine’s Day bouquet. Bonus points for him totally getting the city girl.

Extra bonus points for the note inside – a simple reminder to keep on smiling. Love him, mean it.

So Valentine’s Day was not a total bust. Hooray! That’s not all there’s more… Not about her IMM but about Valentine’s Day and her love of fresh flowers. [PS - she wouldn't mind if you felt compelled to send her an arrangement of five.]

Anyhow, despite being a bit curmudgeon-y about Valentine’s Day, she always enjoys reminding those near and dear how important they are to her. So, she sent her nearest and dearest of friends, M. Drew a bouquet of botanicals all pretty and pink. See for yourself…

She was a bit disappointed because she thought the bouquet would be bigger and fuller but she supposes it’s ok because it will bloom. To her delight her best frand had never had flowers delivered to her. Quelle dommage! The city girl was delighted that she remedied that problem for her.

Have you ever sent someone flowers? If you can’t recall a time when you’ve so, you should make a plan to do so right this very minute. Flowers are one of the city girls most very favorite things ever in the whole wide world. Nothing makes someones day like a flower delivery. So, go forth, find your local florist and make someone’s day. Until the next adventure…

She found herself on the way to Aiken this past Friday night. Aiken is a lovely place and she recommends that you go. In fact, one of her favorite stores is there – Threads. Threads is a lovely, locally-owned shop chock full of goodies. She makes it a point to go there whenever she is in Aiken. One of her most coveted pieces of neckwear – the skull scarf – came from there. See for yourself.

She told you…it’s quite lovely, no? Anyhow, back to the real adventure…

She didn’t make it all the way to Aiken, but close enough to count. She stopped short for a campfire dinner adventure. What is that? Well, let the adventure begin…

The city girl was invited for a night out and she suggested they do it on his turf. After all, it’s not often she gets the chance to have an adventure with Mother Nature. So, they agreed to a campfire dinner adventure. Full disclosure: dinner consisted of roasted marshmallows, chocolate, gummi bears, and beer – and it was glorious.

Are you dying to know who he is? Let’s call him the Eagle Scout. Why? Because he can do everything – that’s what Eagle Scouts do, everything. Hunt? Yes. Fish? Yes. Tie a knot 16 million different ways? Yes. Build a killer campfire? Definitely yes! See for yourself.

He cut down a whole tree just for the city girl. Isn’t that the sweetest thing you’ve heard ever? Ok, fine, so maybe she is exaggerating a teensy bit. But all stories are better that way. Regardless, she was impressed. Campfires don’t often happen in the city, because it’s the city. Also, she love love loves the smell of a good campfire and how it lingers. So, all weekend, she’s reminisced when she slouches into her favorite red jacket. Hat tip to the Eagle Scout.

So, what did they do? Well, she arrived a bit late. She’s not used to driving more than a few miles to get anywhere, and in typical girl fashion, she couldn’t decide which black top was just perfect. (Ultimately, she went with a sweater top with button details, love!) Once she arrived, they headed to the campfire site where she was immediately impressed. See photo above.

They settled in and imbibed in some adult bevvies. What’s a campfire without some cold brews? They chatted about everything under the sun, well under the stars and moon. The city girl had a real lesson in almost everything Mother Nature. She now knows that the Fox Squirrel exists and can be all black and weigh a lot and kind of looks like a cat. And she learned that snakes burrow under the ground when it’s cold. Thank gawd for that because the city girl thinks snakes are good for just a few things – shoes, belts, handbags – but not good at all for crashing a perfectly charming date.

The Eagle Scout was beyond prepared – quelle surprise! (not) – and had plenty of wood to keep the fire and the conversation going all night. She got more and more lessons about Mother Nature. He even shared a frightful story about the time a snake crawled up his shorts. She suggested he make a trading card because that’s some kind of heroic! And she also requested the first copy, autographed of course.

They watched the stars and talked about Jesus and college and more crazy snake stories. Lost in conversation and campfire, it happened… A giant splash. Literally startled the city girl so that she gasped. She still believes it was some giant lake monster. Perhaps one that looks like this…

What luck! She had the Eagle Scout close. She’s sure he would have saved her. After the scare, the city girl realized it was getting late and she had to head back to the city, so she elected to call it a night. They packed up the campfire dinner and headed back to her car. They said good night and she headed back to the city. Until the next adventure…

Well, sort of all of the above. She does love that movie. She remembers seeing it when it came out in theatres. How can you not love a man in a velour suit? Take a look…

Does he make you horny, baby?

Did that give you a laugh? She hopes it did because it brings a smile to her face. While she and Austin Powers are BFFs, she does have a real life BFF International Man of Mystery. In fact, that is exactly about whom she is writing today.

Why? Well, she thinks everyone needs an IMM in her life. The IMM brightens nearly every day for the city girl. Full disclosure: The IMM and the city girl have been friends for a long, long time – like since high school. So, maybe she’s lucky that she has friends that are fearless and head to grad school halfway across the world and then end up living mysterious, middle eastern lives. Hmmm….

Are you intrigued? Hooray! She loves a good story. She knows, you already know. So, back to the IMM. He would completely disagree with the city girl that his life is fabulous and mysterious, but you know, those that are fabulous and mysterious (like yours truly, wink) rarely know it. He should be so lucky to have someone market his mystere, no?

It’s too bad; he’s dead wrong. He lives in Dubai and globe trots for a living. Quelle fabulous, right? He’s recently been in Saudi Arabia – the city girl likes to believe that he’s pal-ing around with princes and riding in nice cars with men to open the doors for him. Why does she like to believe this? Well, she a little teensy – errr epic adventure – vacation planned for the Spring to see her IMM. So, she let’s herself believe that his whole life is all Arabian Nights-esque because that kind of vacation sounds super awesome. Note: IMM, if you’re reading this, don’t comment and burst her bubble. She won’t like it.

Isn’t it just wonderful? Are you already fiercely tapping your keys and creative financing a middle eastern adventure of your own? Do you want to take the city girl along? She’s sure she won’t get enough of Dubai when she’s there, so she’d be happy to tag along avec toi.

Back to the point. Sorry, she got sidetracked by the view. She thinks you, too, should have an IMM in your life. Then you can vacation all over the world and see your IMM at the same time. There are some killer fringe benefits to having an IMM of your own. She’s not sure if it’s the kinda thing you can Google, but she’s sure that you should have one.

The reality is that she had a friend pass away recently. It took her by complete surprise and everyone really. She has in the days post his passing spent more and more time thinking about what’s important here on Earth and what happens after we depart. She has also spent a lot of time reading. (She thinks you should do this, too.)

The city girl has taken on the Read-The-Bible-In-A-Year challenge. She must admit that she struggles with this. She has found it soothing in the days since her friend’s death. She also recently read a blog post by a dear friend Wesley Donehue about Concentrating on Relationships…read it, do it, now. He’s spot on. She hates to admit that because she kinda hates for him to know that he’s right, dang it. Oh well!

Wesley made that post the same day the city girl’s friend, @rickcaffeinated, passed away. More and more the city girl doesn’t believe in coincidences but rather that the Man upstairs has a greater plan for certain things to come together at just the right moments in our lives.

Many of her friends have written posts about Rick – to honor his life, to memorialize his spirit, to remember his friendship, to share their grief, pain, and more. The city girl is writing today to talk about what Heaven smells like.

Does that image make you smell anything? Fresh cut grass? Sunshine? Both? Neither? She finds it a bit funny that nearly every image of Heaven is similar to this rendition using Google search.

She’s not sure about today but she can in full faith tell you that Heaven smelled like a good cup of coffee on January 11, 2013. That is the day that her friend, Rick, experienced a medical attack and died.

Every one of us, of you, mourns in a different way and deals with the loss of someone near and dear in a unique way. She’s not sure if this is her way, but she is sure that Man upstairs was waiting on Rick with a good cup of coffee. And maybe some action figures, a dry erase board, and even a gadget or two or ten.

If you haven’t read Wes’s post mentioned above, read it now for Pete’s sake. focus on rule #1 and rule #3. Rick would have agreed that you need to invest in people and focus on those closest to you. The city girl still gets a bit mopey when she thinks about a world without Rick because he was the kind of person that made you feel good about life. He was a shining example of how to uplift others, cultivate friendships, love your family remain positive, and lend a hand.

What? Has she been drinking? Sadly, not yet today. Maybe later. Anyhow, the two make sense together because EdVenture is hosting an adults-only party where there will be wine. So, hey have a glass or five…for the kids.

Let’s start with the wine and then we’ll get to the party. And then more wine probably. Are you a wino? Don’t act like you don’t know what that means…are you? Well, the city girl is. She loves a good glass of wine. In fact, she thinks there’s no better way to get a good rest at night than a big glass of red wine.

So, she loves wine and also thinks it’s a sleeping pill. Yep, so far, so good. Despite enjoying a late night glass of red, she much prefers white. She rather enjoys a crisp, fresh, and fruity wine.

She also doesn’t play by the rules. Quelle surprise! She drinks whatever she’s in the mood for and doesn’t always pair it with her food. And she even puts ice cubes in her glass sometimes. True story. Anyhow, it’s not just her, it’s the culture of her family and their closest friends. See for yourself.

Snapshot: Last minute shopping trip before Thanksgiving

Ok, so now you know, she likes a crisp white. And she’s open for dinner, if you’re wondering. Let’s talk about the kids, now and the title of this post, Wine: The Kids Will Love It! Well, they’ll love that you love it (and also probably love it later in life).

Today, she wants to share two of her favorite things: a movie and a book. Not just any movie or any old book, but her most very favorite movie and one of her favorite books.

Let’s start with the movie. Steel Magnolias. Have you seen it? She’s just going to assume you have, because well, all of her friends have seen it, a time or a million. There was a spat where she watched the movie every night, no exaggeration. She still watches it often. It’s almost always in the DVD player or ready-to-roll in her beloved MacBook.

She’s even hosted a girls night at her house, where the group sample champagne and hors d’oeuvres and sat glued to the screen mouthing their favorite lines. It’s true!

Do you have a favorite line from the classic? The city girl does. When Ouiser questions Annelle at Truvy’s about her marriage, she responds, “Well, I can’t really talk about it.” My favorite line in the whole movie is right after that, when M’Lynn and Clairee sweetly, in unison chime-in, “Of course you can!”

Every time she watches the movie, the city girl recites that line. She loves it. She uses it in her everyday life, too. Example: …that’s not on the menu. “Can’t you just make it anyway? Well,  of course you can!” Works like a charm.

She has many other favorites, but that really is her most very favorite. She’s dying to know yours! Please share.

OK. Now, the book. Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. She knows, you may be a bit shocked by this. It’s hard for her to say what her most favorite book because she loves so many. This one however is one of her favorites for many reasons.

First, she’s a macaholic. What’s that mean? You know, someone who is crazy over Apple products. Yep, that’s her. In fact, all of her posts come directly from her beloved MacBook that she mentioned earlier. She digresses.

Not only does she love Apple products, she thinks Steve Jobs is a genius extraordinnaire like George Lucas, the guy behind Star Wars. Reading his biography confirmed this persuasion of hers. He was truly one-of-a-kind. So smart. So thoughtful. So cocky. So lovable.

The city loves biographies (and documentaries). So, it’s not surprising that she would love this one, particularly this one. She likes to learn things about people and stuff, so biographies are a natural choice, but she felt even more informed than usual after reading this one. In fact, she might have to pullout her signed copy and re-read it. She encourages you to do the same. Or read it for the first time. See for yourself.

She would like to share that her new signature beverage is a vodka soda!

For some of you reading this may not seem like a BIG deal, but to her it’s well life-changing. She’s trying to shift her diet regimen to a more clean, whole diet. Part of that is reducing sugar intake, so the tonic had to go. Le sigh.

She was holding out and didn’t want to switch, but she took the plunge and it’s not been so bad. Lucky for her a vodka soda looks almost just like a vodka tonic. See for yourself.
